Touch Down

Un-screw the end of the barrel and pull up and then push down on the metal shaft to pull up the ink (the nib should be in the ink bottle).

This was also known as a “Pneumatic Down Stroke Filler” because the ink is pulled into the barrel on the down stroke of the metal shaft. This pen was well engineered and quite easy to fill.

Sheaffer released this line of pneumatic pens in 1949. When the shaft or plunger is depressed, the ink sac is emptied by the air pressure that is thusly generated. The pressure was automatically released once the plunger was fully depressed, which in turn, allowed the sac to fill with ink. Sheaffer aptly named these pens the “Touchdown” due to its being efficient, and quite simple to fill.

These pens were first released as a fairly large sized pen with equally large two-toned nibs in 1949. However, just one year later, in 1950, Sheaffer redesigned the pen with a “TM” model (Thin Model) which was in production for a several years.
