7. The clip ball will be solid, not indented inward, and later models are somewhat oval. Some of the earlier models have more of a rounded clip ball. In addition, the clip should extend from the entire top cap band, not under it or above it (see the pics on the right above of the red and black Montblanc’s then look at the two opposing fakes closely. You will see that the clip is even with both the top and the bottom of the gold circular clip ring). Fakes frequently will have the clip coming from underneath the ring, look further at the pics below for some examples of this tendency.
8. The end of the 144 pen should not have an extended gold section (note, not all Montblanc's have a gold band on the section, this refers only to the 144’s). Perhaps some special editions have this gold ring around the section, but it is not there on 146’s and 149’s. A sure sign of a fake is if there is a gold band around the bottom portion of the section and your pen is not a 144. There should be a shorter band of rubber on the section of the 146’ and 149’.
9. If the pen comes with the presentation box it should have the Montblanc snow cap on the inside lid and it will be white stroked with a thin black line. Fakes invert this making the snowcap black.
Sometimes, the box is white and padded inside, and sometimes it is satiny, but still, in both cases the Montblanc snow cap emblem is white and outlined in black. Again, the Snowcap "splat" Montblanc emblem tends to be black in the fake Montblanc boxes. If the box is fake, then it surely casts doubt on the authenticity of the pen.
6. The Montblanc snow cap should, when the pen is laid down, extend just a little over the top of the cap of the pen, and typically only two points of the snow cap will be visible from the side view at a time. Note, however, that the top portion of the cap can be screwed and fitted, so on occasion, you may see three points. If you do, hold the pen so the middle point is centered, the other two will be barely visible and you will only see the outline of their edges. Also note, that you should look at the pen from directly above it, or straight on, to see the snow cap extend just a bit over the sides. This is not the case with the 149's as the cap is larger and rounder, but it should be fairly evident on the 146's and 144's if the picture is taken with the pen lying flat. Additionally, the snow cap should not be "outlined" in any fashion, but rather a pure white emblem that sits over the cap of the pen. The snowcap should be rounded at the tips, not pointed, and should be centered exactly on top of the pen. (Note, there are some earlier, vintage Montblanc's that do not have a snowcap at all on the cap, and still others that have an outline only of the snowcap. These are not, however, the pens we are discussing here (144's, 146', & 149's.)
Authentic Montblanc’s
Authentic Montblanc’s
Inauthentic Montblanc’s
Authentic Montblanc’s. Look at the clip balls, and see how the clips extend from the full area of their bands. Also, see how the white Montblanc “Star” or “Snowcap” can be seen on the 144’s and 146’s. The two pens on the far right are 149’s, notice that laying flat the star is not visible because they are too fat. Also, the 042 Monte Rosa has no Snowcap.
Look at these fake Montblanc’s. See how the clip extends from the bottom of the clip band rather than extending flush with it? Also, note how the Snowcap’s appear pointed at the tips. Compare these closely with the Snowcap’s pictured above. In addition, there are no serial numbers on any of these obvious fakes. Look at the cap on the far right. Notice the cap band how rounded it is and how it protrudes outward from the cap. Compare this to the 146 Celluloid pictured above (middle) and the 149 above (far right) and observe how those cap bands are not so rounded.
Observe the fakes on the left. Note the prolonged section cap, on the one on the far right. And look closely at the first two and compare to the authentic 144 in the picture on the right. Notice the other Montblanc’s don’t have a gold circulate at the section, but instead have a thin rubber band.
Observe the boxes above. The Montblanc Snowcap is white and it is outlined in black.
Look at the box to the left containing the fake Starwalker and the Montblanc logo below. The image is inverted, making the snowcap black.
